COLLEGE & CAREER READINESS MYTHS
Sending my Student to a Private School is going to earn them a College Scholarship.
THE TRUTH
- Except for a few premier high school programs around the country it doesn't matter where you send your son/daughter to school. They are competing against hundreds of thousands of other student athletes around the nation for only a few spots on a college roster. They have to learn how the recruiting process works, how to stand out from the crowd and how to get on a Recruiting Board.
COLLEGE & CAREER READINESS MYTHS
My Student's Athletic Coach will get them recruited.
THE TRUTH
- This is one of the biggest misperceptions parents have when it comes to the recruiting process. The truth is, the majority of the high school coaches around the nation may have 3-4 college coaches they personally know. And the majority of those are usually D1 coaches. So what happens if your son/daughter is one of the 99% and is not a D1 athlete? Where does that leave them? It's simple, it leaves him with '0' offers. The high school coach's job is to win football games, that's what keeps his job, not getting student athletes recruited. Further, 99% of them don't even fully understand the recruiting process... The only one being recruited is the student (not the parent, not the high school coach) so the student has to take ownership of the (entire) process.
COLLEGE & CAREER READINESS MYTHS
Making a Athletic Highlight video will get my Student a Scholarship to play College Sports.
THE TRUTH
- Making a highlight video is one piece of a very large process. College coaches are recruiting athletes based on the student athletes Character, Academics, Work Ethic/Game Performance and Physical Attributes (in that exact order). You see the order of where Game Performance comes in, 4th. And what if your student's highlight video doesn't have many highlights because he didn't get enough playing time? Then the highlight video must include enough footage to show your son has an impeccable 'work ethic' (ie. workouts, training). College coaches want players on their team that are leaders with great character.
COLLEGE & CAREER READINESS MYTHS
My Child will receive a College Scholarship because he/she is the best on their team.
THE TRUTH
- Being the best on his/her team will no doubt get attention 'if' (and that's a big 'if') the competition level they play against is at a high level. Remember, you son/daughter is not being recruited based on how good their teammates are, they're being evaluated on who they'll be competing against at the Collegiate Level.
COLLEGE & CAREER READINESS MYTHS
My Child will receive a College Scholarship because he/she went to a Local/National Camp & Combine.
THE TRUTH
- Let's put this into perspective quick! No college will offer your son/daughter if they attend a camp. These camps are good for one thing and one thing only... to size up the competition, period. If your son/daughter is going to attend a camp make sure they attend one that is located on a college campus and that is run by the athletic department of the college. This is no guarantee of receiving a scholarship, but at least it will get your son/daughter in front of the right people to showcase their talents as well as enabling them to introduce themselves to the college coach(es).
COLLEGE & CAREER READINESS MYTHS
My Child will receive a College Scholarship because he/she received a Letter from the University.
THE TRUTH
- You see this all of the time. A student receives a letter from a college or university and the first thing they do with it is they blast it all over social media. What they don't know is that every college that has an athletic program (and the budget for it) buys a high school student athlete list and send 10's of thousands of GENERIC LETTERS out to the list every year. Even if the letter is from the head coach that head coach has sent hundreds more (of the same letter) out to other prospective prospects. The fact is, College scholarships are offered after relationships have been built over several months of dialogue.
